I haven’t quite decided what I want this blog to be yet, but as of now, I’m feeling it’ll be a bit of everything. So, why not talk about music a li’l bit? Music is a pretty dope thing to talk about. I’ve basically been listening to the same three albums over these past couple of months, and I thought I would share my obsessions.
Ok, I’m totally in love with these girls. They might just be the raddest thing that’s happened to pop music in the past 10 years. The “dark pop” girl group consists of guitarists Josette Maskin and Naomi McPherson, as well as lead vocalist and lyricist Katie Gavin. Of course they are all incredibly talented musicians, but what really attracts me to them is their lyrics and just like…general vibe. The words are so powerful and real. I love authentic “pop” bands and these gals are definitely doin’ them.
Their album may have just been released a week ago, but I’ve already listened to it SO many times (50 and counting…). I know I should stop and listen to other music, but I just don’t wanna. They have it all – a great sound, painfully relatable lyrics, and killer style.
Favorite tracks: Loudspeaker, I Know A Place, Around U, Everything
Jillian Banks. Ah, how do I even begin to tell you all how much I love this woman? She gives off this extraterrestrial vibe and I’m totally here for it. Her music is also extremely powerful and raw that it sometimes feels like a punch in the gut – but in a good way. Like, this is the perfect album to blast in headphones when you’re feeling wronged. This is especially true of Gemini Feed, Trainwreck, and Judas (maybe why those are some of my favorite tracks). Better yet, Banks has this crazy-cool way of being aggressive, yet completely vulnerable and tender. I love this album because it has both. This album came out in September, yet I still can’t seem to get over it.
Favorite tracks: Gemini Feed, Trainwreck, Mother Earth, Judas
I’ve just re-discovered this album and man…this stuff is my jam for real. Grimes (aka Claire Boucher) is truly one of a kind. This is no secret if you’ve ever happened across her music. Her past albums are incredibly well made and have gotten a lot of praise, but for some reason Art Angels is extra fun and addicting. Perhaps the reason I prefer this new release is because this is when I started to take more attention to her. Regardless, I really feel that she killed it with this one. Full of infectious pop sounds and intense lyrics, it kinda covers it all.
Favorite tracks: Flesh Without Blood, Kill V. Maim, Artangles, Pin
Honorable mention: The Lemon Twigs – Do Hollywood
I realize that these don’t offer much variety in terms of genre, but this has been my vibe lately I guess. Take a listen to these guys because I’ve been bopping to them pretty much non-stop for a reason. Feel free to comment down below any music you’ve been loving lately, I’m always on the hunt for new tunes.
